Intent

It is our intention to enable children to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information. We develop the skills necessary for children to be able to use information in a discriminating and effective way and know how to keep safe when using the internet. We offer a structured sequence of lessons, allowing teachers to ensure that they have covered the skills required to meet the aims of the national curriculum. The content allows for a broad, deep understanding of computing and how it links to children's lives. It offers a range of opportunities for consolidation, challenge and variety. All pupils can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, they develop analytical problem-solving skills and learn to evaluate and apply information technology. They have regular practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve problems. Computing skills are a major factor in enabling children to be confident, creative and independent learners and it is our intention that children have every opportunity available to allow them to achieve this. We want children to know more, remember more and understand more in computing so that they leave primary school computer literate.

Implementation

In Key Stage One, Computing is taught with cross-curricular links and to support other areas of learning. This allows children to use technology in a purposeful way. Algorithms, programming and coding are taught at an age appropriate level and the basics are consolidated ready for Key Stage two. All aspects of Computing are taught with the golden thread of safety running through each lesson and children are taught how to keep safe online. Additional E-safety lessons are taught half termly in an age-appropriate way.

In Key Stage two algorithms, programming and coding are taught  in a more complex way and for different purposes. Children also develop their knowledge of computer networks, internet services and the safe and purposeful use of the internet and technology. E-safety is referenced whenever the internet it used and specific lessons continue to be taught half termly.  Data Handling is featured more heavily in Years 5 and 6. Skills learnt throughout Years 1 to 4 are used to support data presentation. Assessment is ongoing using Otrack and progression throughout Key Stage two is evident as knowledge gained in previous years is developed and extended.

Impact

Learning in computing will be enjoyed across the school. Teachers will have high expectations and quality evidence will be presented in a variety of forms. Children will use digital and technological vocabulary accurately, alongside a progression in their technical skills. They will be confident using a range of hardware and software and will produce high-quality purposeful products. Children will see the digital world as part of their world, extending beyond school, and understand that they have choices to make. They are well informed about internet safety at an age-appropriate level through E-safety assemblies, Project evolve, ICT and Jigsaw lessons. They will be confident and respectful digital citizens going on to lead happy and healthy digital lives.

At HCPS every class has an allocated slot in our ICT Suite, where they will take part in Computing lessons. Children will learn:

  • How technology is used in the world
  • How to safely access the internet
  • How to create, edit and use different media
  • How to create, analyse and debug algorithms

ICT is used throughout school, technology is used in school to progress learning and provide the children with new experiences.
