Remembrance Day
In School we have met as a whole school to talk about Remembrance Day and remember in quiet silence. We explored how poppies have changed overtime and why we wear them each year. We also spoke about the significance of the position of the leaf which points towards 11 o'clock to symbolise the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Mrs Simmonite laid the Poppy Wreath in Hornsea memorial Garden to thank all of the people who have served in our armed forces.
Below is a poem that we have been learning in school.
In Flanders Fields
By John McCrae
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
